Apple Possibly Will Release Cheaper iPhone This Year

Apple may be working on a new low cost iPhone that evidently sports a larger display and a release date that is obviously going to take place at some point in the second half of this year. The report added that the company is looking into releasing a Smartphone with 5-inch screen display.

The reputation of the iPad mini in China may be a big reason why Apple is looking to release a low-cost iPhone in new markets where price is a prime concern of the consumers. The device is also rumoured to come in various hues.

In addition, with the arrival of newer, smaller, cheaper, and more power-efficient chipsets, from CPUs to GPUs to now even LTE chips, "the entry level to mid range smart phones may pave the way for Apple bringing out the low-cost iPhone." The sources particularly mentioned Qualcomm's "latest family of Snapdragon chipsets, including the dual core MSM8960 and the quad core APQ8064" as a major reason Apple may have selected to build a low-cost, mid-range Smartphone.

The cheaper iPhone could also come as soon as later this year, and while it may seem that Apple would never release many versions of the iPhone, due to Steve Job’s focus on profit rather than scale, but under Tim Cook’s reign, the company released the iPad mini alongside the full-size iPad, so it’s very possible that Apple is moving in a similar direction with the iPhone.

Of course, we still remain skeptical, and Apple has never catered towards the budget crowd before, and it would be difficult to believe that they ever would, giving that they never bought into the budget net book trend a couple years back, and instead released the Mac Book Air, which was fundamentally the company’s answer to the slower and smaller notebooks that eventually died out. Then again, WSJ has a pretty good track record with the accuracy of its Apple rumours.

According to the report, the product would mark the first time Apple has diversified its line of smart phones with different models since launching the original iPhone in 2007.
Apple at this time sells older models, such as the iPhone 4 and 4S, on its website at a reduced price.
