Amazon plans big expansion of online grocery business


Amazon.com Inc is preparation a major roll-out of an online grocery business that it has been quietly developing for years, targeting one of the largest retail sectors yet to be upended by e-commerce, according to two people familiar with the circumstances.

The company is arrangement to expand its product footprint to cameras, mobiles and other electronics devices.

"What it way to consumers in India is they get to choose from a vast selection at low prices through fast and reliable delivery," said Greg Greeley, VP-international expansion in Amazon. Globally, it has over 2 million sellers and over 200 million customers across 9 marketplaces including Canada, Japan, China and the UK.

If those new locations go well, the company may launch Amazon Fresh in 20 other urban areas in 2014, including some outside the United States, said one of the populace.

Bill Bishop, a high up supermarket analyst and consultant, said the company was targeting as many as 40 markets, without divulging how he knew of Amazon's organized.

Amazon's marketplace allows third-party sellers to access its suite of services including Selling on Amazon and execution by Amazon (FBA). When buyer lists the products on the website, they maintain their own inventory, fulfill orders and provide customer service. In the FBA model, third party sellers can access Amazon's realization resources and expertise, customer service and shipping options. "We grant barrier free access national without any listing fee. Sellers can influence on Amazon's investment in technology and improvement. It also provides sellers pay as you use fulfillment service," said Amit Agarwal, country manager for Amazon India, who has been with Amazon for the past 14 years.
